Leek Pie

When I was at Pearl Alley Farmers Market, I picked up two of the last three bundles of leeks at a stall (how awful that I don’t remember which farm it was!).  I have been lovingly obsessing over them and plotting what to do that would be a proper homage to one of my most… Read More Leek Pie

Tomato Bread Soup

I’ve been in an Italian mood lately.  One of the things that’s been encouraging this is a cookbook I hadn’t pulled down in a while: Flavors of Tuscany, by Nancy Harmon Jenkins.  There is a real difference in Italian cooking and Italian-American cooking.  There is an ease to these Italian recipes: many can be served… Read More Tomato Bread Soup

Farewell, Local Foods Week! We won’t forget you.

Day Seven: Dinner, Gran Finale, Ode to a Pig

Roasted Eggplant and Roma Tomato Gâteau

Lunch was a synthesis of warm roasted vegetables with cool, fresh greens.  My kind of meal: minimum prep, maximum flavor. In the fridge, there was a bit of the roasted eggplant and tomato from last night’s dinner.  I used this to layer a beautiful, yet simple to prepare gâteau.  Paired with a green salad with… Read More Roasted Eggplant and Roma Tomato Gâteau

A Vegetarian Dinner to End a Vegetarian Day

Some days our family goes all veg, but it’s almost always by accident.  It’s not until later in the evening when we think over what we ate that day do we realize it’s done.  Meals like the one we made tonight are the main reason for it.  We sometimes just don’t miss the meat.  Food this good will satisfy… Read More A Vegetarian Dinner to End a Vegetarian Day
